Erik North is a design and production professional with a career focussed in the Arts, Culture and Education sectors. With an early passion for live music and film, Erik embarked on Audio Visual Media education at RMIT in the late 80’s, initially applying these skills at a number of institutions in the tertiary education sector, designing, building and running AV systems within teaching, performance and media production areas, whilst also developing an independent practice in collaborative multimedia installation and performance.
After returning to study Furniture Design in 1999, he went on to set up the independent design and fabrication business LEV. From his West Heidelberg studio workshop, then from within the cooperative “Worco”, Erik went on to design and fabricate a diverse range of projects: domestic furniture pieces for retail, commercial interiors including a number of melbourne cafes, props for dance and theatre works, artworks for visual artists and furniture for exhibition tours for NETS Victoria. During this period he was also able to apply his Audio Visual media and furniture making skills from within the teams at Craft Victoria and Melbourne Museum, installing exhibitions, whilst also doing stints at the Regent and Forum theatres working backstage on major live theatre and live music events.
Erik’s currently holds a role within the RMIT Culture at RMT University that neatly encapsulates much of the education, experience and collaborative work, producing exhibitions, events and other engagement experiences across RMITs impressive exhibition spaces, event venues and collections. Erik continues his design and making practice at Worco, where he has been a member for 13 of the cooperatives impressive 41 years.
